More Then Meets The Eye (Chapter 4)
“And this is the ball room.” Alex says as he opens a door for me. My eyes widen as I take in the huge room.
“This concludes our tour.” he mumbles as he leans against the wall.
“What on earth would you use this for?” I ask amazed, twirling and looking at the design of clouds on the ceiling.
“For balls and dancing…?” he answers sounding confused.
“This is so cool!” I squeak excitedly.
“Wait. You don’t have balls in the InBetween?” Alex asks slightly taken aback.
“No. Well…I guess you could say we did, but that was a long time ago. Now we just have parties.” I tell him as I twirl again. The door to the garden is flung open and Destiny with Damien being pulled behind come in.
“Serenity!” Destiny yells, her voice echoing off the walls.
“Hey,” I answer, turning to face them completely.
“Wow. I forgot we even had this room.” Damien says quietly as Destiny pulls him to stand next to her by me.
“I know!” Destiny agrees with a thought full look on her face.
Alex sighs quietly blowing warm air on my neck, I shiver for not noticing how close he got.
“We should have a ball!” Destiny shrieks. I jump falling back into Alex at the loudness of her voice. Alex laughs quietly but catches me. I pull away from him trying to hide my blush.
“Let’s not and say we did.” I suggest.
“Like a ‘welcome back’ ball.” Destiny turns to Damien to check for his answer, but he only smiles in return.
“Destiny…if you do that your just begging for angels to get her.” Alex tells her frowning.
“We could even get the old dresses out! Oh!! There’s so much to do in so little time!” she yells as she grabs my wrist.
“Destiny…what are you doing?” I ask looking at her.
“We’re taking you to find you a dress!” she says happily, pulling me toward the door. I drag my feet as much as I can.
“This dress is okay though.” I say trying to reason with her. Not wanting to think of all the floor length, lacy ball gowns.
“Tsk. That’s going to look like a rag compared to what dress I have in mind for you.” she says slyly. My eye twitches.
“Alex!!” I scream. But Damien’s already holding him back.
I sigh quietly in defeat and let Destiny drag me to my demise.
“You look so cute in this!” Destiny complains as she looks at me. I turn to look in the mirror again. She forced me into a red knee length dress, with black lace falling under the red silk ribbon tied around my waist.
“No.” I repeat for what I said for the last seven dresses.
“Fine. Put this one one.” she says as she shoves a midnight blue dress into my arms and pushes me into the bathroom.
I sigh as I slip out of the red dress and into the blue one. I hold my hair up as I try to zip up the zipper as much as I can. I look at myself in the mirror, and I wasn’t going to lie, I actually looked really cute in this dress. Destiny had given me a strapless, floor length dress with silver beads in a floral design over the chest and dipping down to my thigh, where there was a cut in the blue showing layer over layer of black lace.
“Are you okay?” Destiny asks after knocking. I shake my head to clear my thoughts before unlocking the door to let her in.
She walks in looks me over with a victorious smile.
“No complaining. Your wearing this one.” she says excitedly before pulling me to sit in front of a vanity. She brushes my hair out before getting to work on pinning it up into a bun.
“Who’s Vincent?” I ask before I can chew over the question. Destiny hesitates before putting the next pin in.
“Why do you ask?” she asks me.
“Oh, well I met him in the library, and Alex called him October, I was just wondering you don’t have to answer.” I mumble.
“Vincent Jasper October.” she says after a couple minutes of silence. Why does it sound like he’s a ‘no talk’ subject?
“He’s a Higher like Alex. But…he’s the first ever Vampire to get kicked out of Hell and put in such a category. Usually they just go to Insane or Unsafe. But he completely believes that humans are not just toys for demons and vampires.” Destiny continues with a perplexed look on her face. She puts the last pin in and steps back to look at her handy work.
“Perfect.” she says quietly. Before handing me a pair of flat black shoes.
“If I remember well from last time, you can’t wear heels.” she says laughing. I slip the flats on and stand.
“You should get ready, I’ll go help the guys.” I smile at her.
“Your right!” she says before running for the closet.
I shake my head laughing at her before walking out. I turn down one of the many hallways, half in a daze.
I frown slightly as the hallway gets darker. Did I take a wrong turn?
“What’s someone like you doing here?” something hiss at me from the dark. I squint into the darkness trying to get my eyes to adjust. I managed to find a cell with a…creature in it.
“Someone like me?” I repeat, taking a step closer. The creature walks to the front of the cell holding the metal bars.
“Yes, someone like you.” it growls looking at me with unnatural green eyes. Such a sad look in it’s eyes.
“Are you hurt?” I ask worried. It takes a step back before pressing itself against the bars and reaches out towards me.
“Your the Healer aren’t you?” it asks slightly strained trying to touch my hand.
“Yes.” I say as I hesitantly move my hand towards the things outstretched hand. Just as I’m about to touch it’s hand I’m pulled back into a tight embrace.
“What do you think your doing.” growls the person behind me.
The creature hisses in irritation. I turn my head to look at who’s holding me. Blush rushes to my cheeks as I notice that it’s Vincent. He just glares at the thing in front of him.
A loud ripping and screeching sound comes from the cage. I pull my gaze away from Vincent to look at the cage. In the spot where the the creature was is now a glowing figure with wings glaring with bottomless eyes at Vince. He picks me up bridal style and carries me away from the angel.
“Princess you shouldn’t wander around like that.” he says smiling down at me. I blush slightly.
“It was an accident.” I mumble embarrassed. Vincent looks me over and I squirm slightly under his gaze.
“Ready for the ball?” he asks.
“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I sigh. Vincent laughs quietly showing his fangs.
“Don’t tell me you forgot how to dance.” he says amused looking at me with his blood red eyes.
“I-you-of course I can dance!” I yell exasperated, looking away to try and cover up my blush.
“Mm…your embarrassed.” he says, a smile in his voice.
“Er-I am not.” I mumble stubbornly.
“Then why does your heartbeat continue to race and you won’t look at me?” he asks, clearly amused. I turn to look at him with blush covering my cheeks. He laughs at the look I gave him before setting me down in front of the door to the ball room.
“Here you go princess.” he says as he lightly brushes the small strands of hair away from my neck. Vincent gently presses a kiss on my cheek before trailing down to my neck with his nose. My pulse races as I start to blush again. He laughs quietly before pulling away and turning on his heal to walk away. Leaving me in front of the doors speechless.
